MLHS Robotics Regional Recap

A message from our FIRST Robotics Lead Mentor, Mr. Joel Barthel,

Heading into practice rounds we were feeling ready to go, having gotten our extraordinary 2-game piece auto program to work, and having single handedly demonstrated we could place up to 8 high level coral and earn upwards of 58 total pts by ourselves alone (this is more than a single robot’s share of the total points typically needed to win not just a regular match but the playoffs).  Even with all our lost matches and low overall rank, we somehow ended up ranked 6th (out of over 50 teams) in terms of autonomous points.

But in a disappointing and humbling turn of events we had a number of flukes that made this a tough regional for us to go through… and ended up with a uncharacteristic low record for our team 2-7.  For at least 4 of our 9 matches we got a coral (game piece) inside our bot and consequently, due to a simple rule that says you can’t carry more than one game piece at a time, this also meant we had to go from being an offensive bot to being on the defensive only.   What’s more there is another rule that only one bot can be on the opponents side at a time.  So twice we ended up getting stuck on a algae (other game piece) with no hope of getting assistance/recovery. We of course are coming up with remedies to prevent the extra game pieces, as well as other odds and ends we learned, and are looking to also add a climber for the end game.  So the bright side is there really only is room for improvement, and we are certainly eager to do just that.

The students handled themselves very well, and we had an uncommon 3 sets of visits to our pits by judges who were interested in our team.  Unfortunately,  most of the awards that we would have been eligible for also required “demonstrating on the field” and that wasn’t an option for most matches this time.

Below is this years Team Impact Video!  The judges especially enjoyed our impact presentation and video.

Support the Broadcasting Club in a variety of ways- Click the button below to learn more!

Our viewing stats keep growing! This year the Broadcasting Club changed the viewing platform over to the MLHS YouTube Channel. Since the first game of the year we average 80-98 viewers, and over 500 views after it is posted. In addition 555 subscribed to our channel so far, and it keeps growing as the word gets out!

Another blessing of the Broadcasting Club, is that we can share MLHS with others. The players and broadcast members continue to let their lights for Jesus shine.
