Boys Basketball

This weekend was filled with an exciting array of Lancer sports action, kicking off on the evening of Friday, December 13. The boys basketball team embarked on a challenging journey to Howards Grove, where they faced off against the formidable Tigers in what promised to be a thrilling matchup. From the very beginning, the atmosphere was electric, with both teams displaying their skills and determination on the court. The first half of the game turned out to be a gripping back-and-forth affair, showcasing the competitive spirit of both squads. With each team exchanging baskets and defensive stands, the score remained closely contested, ultimately leading to a halftime tie at 29 points apiece.

As the second half commenced, the intensity of the game escalated. The Tigers, fueled by their home crowd and a strong desire to secure a victory, came out with renewed energy and focus. They managed to capitalize on a few key plays, outscoring the Lancers by 10 points in this pivotal half. Despite the Lancers' feisty and relentless defense, which had been a hallmark of their play throughout the season, the Tigers found ways to penetrate and exploit openings, ultimately leading them to a hard-fought victory. The final score reflected the Tigers' effort, ending the game at 61-51 in favor of Howards Grove, much to the delight of their home fans.

In terms of individual performances, juniors Will Franzen and Jaymen Ott emerged as

standout players for the Lancers, each contributing significantly to the team's efforts. Both athletes showcased their scoring abilities by leading the team with 14 points each, demonstrating their skill and determination on the court. Additionally, they each secured 5 rebounds, underscoring their contributions not just in scoring but also in their ability to control the boards and create second-chance opportunities for their team. Franzen, in particular, had an impressive shooting night, going 4-6 from beyond the three-point arc, which highlighted his sharpshooting capabilities and ability to stretch the defense. His performance was a bright spot in an otherwise challenging game for the Lancers, as they look to regroup and focus on their upcoming challenges in the season.

Girls Basketball

The Lancer girls basketball team showcased their impressive skills and determination this past weekend as they traveled north to face off against the Sevastopol Pioneers. In a thrilling contest, the Lancers emerged victorious with a final score of 73-60, further solidifying their reputation as a formidable force in the league. This win marks another significant milestone in their season, as they continue to build on their already remarkable record.

Throughout the game, the Lancers demonstrated exceptional teamwork and strategic

execution, which were key factors in their success. Four standout players contributed significantly to the scoreboard, each showcasing their talent and hard work. Leading the charge was Senior Ginevra Ermis, who not only displayed her scoring prowess but also her leadership on the court, finishing the game with a team-high of 18 points. Her ability to read the game and make crucial plays was instrumental in maintaining the Lancers' momentum.

Makiah Krause
Makiah Krause (P.Durkee)

Following closely behind, Makiah Krause made her mark by contributing 14 points, displaying an impressive range of shooting that kept the Pioneers' defense on their toes. Her agility and quick decision-making allowed her to create scoring opportunities, both for herself and her teammates. Lilly Mehlhorn also had a commendable performance, adding 13 points to the Lancers' total. Her tenacity and hustle on both ends of the court were evident, as she consistently found ways to penetrate the Pioneers' defense and capitalize on scoring chances.

Senior Addison Korte rounded out the group of double-digit scorers with a solid 11 points. Korte's experience and composure under pressure were vital, especially during critical moments of the game when the Pioneers attempted to mount a comeback. Her contributions extended beyond scoring, as she played a key role in facilitating ball movement and creating open looks for her teammates.

With this victory, the Lancers now boast an impressive overall record of 8-0, with a perfect 3-0 standing in conference play. Their unbeaten streak reflects not only their skill and talent but also their relentless work ethic and dedication to the sport. As the season progresses, the Lancers are poised to continue their winning ways, building on the chemistry they have developed as a team and striving for excellence in every game they play. The momentum they have gained thus far will undoubtedly serve them well as they prepare for the challenges that lie ahead in the remainder of the season.

Hockey

Last week the junior varsity hockey team was back in action playing at the Fox Cities Stars co-op team (Xavier, Kimberly, Fox Valley Lutheran, St. Mary's Central, Little Chute, Kaukauna, Freedom, New London, and Brillion).  The United Hockey team (Manitowoc County Schools) played hard but came up short in a 6-2 loss.  The Manitowoc United team was out shot 47-25 in the JV game.  The loss dropped the JV team to 1-1 on the young season.

The varsity team played the Depere co-op team in Manitowoc Saturday night but the

upperclassman lead team from Depere was too much for the young Manitowoc United team who lost 6-0.  The highlight for the United team was senior goalie Dan Karlin (Two Rivers HS) who stopped 46 of 52 shots in the game.    Manitowoc United Hockey has only two seniors, Karlin and Forward Argon Jack (Mishicot HS).  The varsity sits at 1-4 on the season.

Wrestling

The wrestling team recently participated in the highly competitive Brillion Invitational, an event that draws teams from various regions, showcasing a blend of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship. Despite entering the tournament with a small squad, the team's spirit remained high, and each member was eager to give their best effort. Unfortunately, the team faced some challenges, particularly with Leo and Connor, who had limited action throughout the tournament due to injuries sustained in prior matches.

Emett Brodtke
Emett Brodtke (J. Sehloff)

On a brighter note, Emett Brodtke emerged as a standout competitor during the tournament. Displaying remarkable skill and determination, Emmett secured an impressive four pins against his opponents, demonstrating not only his technical prowess but also his ability to maintain composure under pressure. His journey through the brackets was filled with intense matches, each requiring strategic adjustments and mental fortitude. Ultimately, Emmett reached the finals, where he faced a formidable opponent in a hard-fought battle that tested his limits. Although he fought valiantly, he ultimately took second place, a testament to his skill and dedication, and he left the mat with his head held high, proud of his accomplishments and the effort he put forth throughout the tournament. The experience gained from this competition will undoubtedly serve him well in future matches, and the entire team is looking forward to building on this momentum in the upcoming events.
