The Lancers varsity girls' basketball season came to an end Saturday night in the WIAA regional final at Laconia, losing to the #1 seed by a score of 61-31. The Lancers had advanced to that game after an intense overtime win in the Lancer gym the night before over Howards Grove, 44-39, in the second round of the WIAA Div. 4 playoffs.
Friday’s game was the Lancers' third matchup against the Tigers this season, and both teams showed their familiarity with each other, as the game was tight in the first half with strong defense on both sides. The Lancers came back from deficits a couple of times – we were down 12-10 at halftime, and then in the early- to mid-second half we found ourselves down by 8. We battled back to tie the score 35-35 at the end of regulation, and then pulled ahead for the 44-39 win in overtime with key Lancer free throws made in the last minute. Senior MonRaye Ermis led all scorers, getting 17 points, along with 6 rebounds and 3 blocks. Junior Jenna Lischka came on strong in the second half, getting all of her 12 points in that period and overtime. Senior Emma Miller grabbed 7 rebounds.
Saturday the Lancers were not able to continue their intensity from the night before against a very good Laconia team, falling to a 32-15 deficit at halftime against the Spartans. We cut the lead to 12 at one point in the second half, but got no closer and ended our season with the 61-31 loss in the WIAA regional championship game. Lischka managed 8 points in the game along with 4 rebounds. Senior Emily Marohn had 7 points and 7 rebounds, and Miller had 5 points and 4 rebounds. Ermis pulled down 6 rebounds.
The Lancers end their successful season with a 15-11 record. Congratulations, Lancer Ladies! In the next couple of weeks the Sports Update will include a full season summary for each of our girls basketball teams and announce season and conference awards.
